Are You Prepared for Flooding?

We are officially in Autumn and so now is the time to check your flood plan, take steps to make your property more resilient, so you’re as ready as you can be for whatever the weather may bring

Here are five steps for you to consider:

1. Have a Plan

A basic flood plan can make a big difference. Know who to call, where to go, what to take with you, and how to switch off your utilities safely. Write it all down. If you’re stuck on where to start, we recommend visiting Flood Mary’s website - www.floodmary.com – which is packed with free, practical tools, guides and a really help ‘flood to-do-list’.

2. Sign Up for Warnings

You can get free flood alerts from the Environment Agency – this can be by email or telephone. It only takes a few minutes to sign-up, and it might help give you a head-start if a flood risk is possible: https://www.gov.uk/sign-up-for-flood-warnings

3. Keep a Flood Kit Handy

If you need to leave your property quickly, a ready-to-grab kit in a waterproof bag with essentials like ID, chargers, a head torch, warm clothes and medication can help to give you peace of mind. Also consider including copies of your property insurance documents and your flood plan.

4. Already Have PFR?

If you’ve already got flood resilience measures installed at your home, make sure it’s maintained! This is so important - check gaskets and seals or speak to your installer if you have any questions or need help. PFR needs regular care to stay effective.

5. Protect What Matters Most

Take photos of your most valuable possessions, important documents and any PFR measures you've already installed. Store digital copies so you can access them from anyone – save them in the cloud, or even email them to yourself! This can really help if you ever need to make an insurance claim. It’s also a good idea to double-check your flood insurance cover is up to date and understand what’s included in your policy.

Taking small steps like this now can really make a big difference later, when it’s needed most.
